How Do I Get Involved?
|
|

|
|
The 2011-2012 Lutheran Campus Mission Association BikeWalkRun-Athon is your event to plan and shape. Here are some suggestions to help you bring things together for a great BikeWalkRun-Athon: |
|
|
Choose a course
This could be a route to... a service event, between a local supporting church and campus, between two campuses, a loop around campus...you get the idea.
Choose a local cause
A
local cause serves as a rallying point that helps build commitment and
excitement. Perhaps your ministry is planning a mission trip. Or perhaps
your facility deserves an upgrade—new furniture, sign, or enhancements
to a recreation, devotion or study area. Does your campus ministry serve
a local organization or cause that you could help fund? Maybe there's a
critical ministry budget item that needs funding through your help.
Whatever the cause, it will be important for you to build energy and
excitement for supporting it!
Choose your percentage
After
prayerful consideration, choose between 10-50% to go to the national
campus ministry (Lutheran Campus Mission Association) (recommended 20-30%). LCMA will use these funds to start new campus ministries,
revitalize existing ministries and support long-standing ministries.
Choose a date
Provide
yourself enough time to recruit participants and give them time to
visit with family and friends. Also consider the weather and other
campus events in this matter. Pairing the BikeWalkRun-Athon with a
campus event such as a football game (early morning on game day, for
example) could be easy to involve alumni. Another idea for involving
alumni and building momentum might be to schedule this event on the same
day as a regular alumni dinner or function.
Choose one or more leaders (very important!)
Depending
upon how many total participants you think you might want, find at
least one person to help you. Appointing a BWR go-to person will be
helpful all along the way. If you are going for a larger ATHON, creating
a team of 2-5 is recommended.
Set goals
With
your chair and/or team, set goals for total number of participants,
individual participant minimum goals, total funds raised, and number of
people contacted. Remember to be realistic—but also leave room for God
to do big things!
Sign up participants!
Challenge
your students, volunteers, and other supporters to be involved. Show
them how the ministry can benefit from their help! Who could
participate?
- Staff
- Students
- Volunteers
- Members of local churches
- Pastors and church workers in your area
- Alumni
- Parents and other family members of current and past students
- Other supporters in your network
- ...Anyone else you can think of! (What are your university's president and chancellor doing that day...?)
Register
Complete the registration process at least 5 weeks before your date if possible. You can register online. We suggest that you help out your participants by providing envelopes for to keep track of their pledges and donations. You can also provide a promotional brochure; visit our Resources page to download and print it.
Send out participants to invite support
Once you have your registration packet, distribute the envelopes and flyers to your participants as soon as you can!
Hold your BikeWalkRun-Athon and collect gifts
Once
you have held your event, ask that funds be collected within 2 weeks.
The packets will be processed, and you will receive a check for the
percentage of total funds that were received!
Celebrate—and use your funds!
The
numbers will be tabulated by national LCMA—and you can
celebrate what you raised for your ministry, as well as what was raised
to support campus ministry at the national level.
