Bike Ride Across America
Completed!

“...Let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus…”
Heb. 12:1b-2a

On Wednesday, August 1, Pastor Kent Pierce completed a 61-day, 3,671-mile bicycle ride across 12 states in an effort to raise awareness and support for Lutheran ministry and outreach in campus communities.

The odyssey began Saturday, June 2, on the shore of Puget Sound, near Anacortes, Wash. On June 8, he crossed into Idaho; on June 14, Montana; on June 23, North Dakota; on June 29, Minnesota; on July 3, Wisconsin; on July 12, Michigan; on July 16, Ohio; on July 22, Pennsylvania; on July 23, New York; on July 30, Massachusetts. On July 31 he pedaled into Connecticut, and the next day he dipped the wheels of his Gunnar bike in the Atlantic Ocean at Long Island Sound.

Why do it? Why go to the trouble of riding 3,600+ miles to help educate fellow Christians about campus ministry?

"To make a difference," Pastor Kent writes in his blog. "A young person’s college years are years of change. Every young adult who enrolls at a college or university in the United States enters a new world. He or she encounters challenges to his assumptions… her way of thinking… his ideals …her faith. These  years are also years of tremendous opportunity—to grow in faith and character, and to spread the message of God’s grace in Jesus with others."

Over the course of his trip, Pastor Kent had opportunities to stop and speak at a number of churches and share his passion for campus ministry and for the future of the church. The response was overwhelming. Not only was Pastor Kent welcomed warmly over and over, but people were moved by his message to donate a total of more than $10,000 in support of the important mission of ministry and outreach on campus.

Thanks to everyone who offered encouragement and prayer on behalf of Pastor Kent and Lutheran campus ministries! We are grateful for your support, and we invite you to continue supporting the Lutheran Campus Mission Association by telling pastors, youth ministers, leaders, parents and high school students about the opportunities for spiritual growth and Gospel outreach on campus.
